Anu Sopeyin, M.D.

Originally from Nigeria, Dr. Sopeyin moved to the United States at age 16 after being selected for the elite EducationUSA Opportunity Funds Program. She began her academic career at Vassar College, graduating with general and departmental honors in Biochemistry, before earning her medical degree with honors from the Yale School of Medicine, where she was awarded the Dr. Marvin Moser Medical School Thesis Prize.

Following a transitional internship at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dr. Sopeyin completed a rigorous ophthalmology residency at the Johns Hopkins University’s Wilmer Eye Institute. She chose to remain at Johns Hopkins for specialized fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery, working alongside world-renowned pioneers to master the latest advancements in microincisional vitrectomy surgery and advanced retinal imaging.

Throughout her career, Dr. Sopeyin has been recognized for both her clinical acumen and dedication to her patients. She is a recipient of the prestigious Frank L. Coulson, Jr. Award for Clinical Excellence from the Miller Coulson Academy at Johns Hopkins Medicine, as well as the Iliff Kress Excellence in Patient Care Award from the Wilmer Eye Institute. Nationally, she was honored as the American Academy of Ophthalmology Copeland Fellow, a prestigious distinction granted annually to a single trainee to advance leadership and diversity in healthcare advocacy.

Dr. Sopeyin is board-certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and an active member of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS). She is widely published in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals, including JAMA Ophthalmology and The Journal of Clinical Investigation. Today, Dr. Sopeyin proudly blends world-class academic expertise with a compassionate, patient-centered philosophy to protect and restore vision at Mid-South Retina.
