A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PRACTICE:

Mid-South Retina was founded by Rick Sievers, M.D. at St. Francis Hospital—Memphis in 1984. Dr. Sievers saw the need for an “old-fashioned” retina practice in the Mid-South region. His goal from the beginning was to provide excellent medical and surgical care for patients with diseases of the retina and vitreous in a “family-style” environment in which patients could count on the same surgeon taking care of their needs from start to finish.

Drs. Gordon, Priester and Khamapirad all trained under Dr. Sievers during their ophthalmology residencies at UT Memphis and went on to do retinal surgery fellowships in other major medical centers. They were each drawn back to Mid-South Retina by the incredible experiences they had with Dr. Sievers during their residencies. Dr. Gordon joined Dr. Sievers in Memphis in 1996. Dr. Priester founded the Jackson Tennessee hub of Mid-South Retina in 1997. Dr. Khamapirad joined Dr. Sievers and Dr. Gordon in Memphis in 2003 and began helping Dr. Priester in Jackson one to two days a week.  Dr. Khamapirad moved to Jackson in 2005 to join Dr. Priester full time. A firm believer in the practice style Dr. Sievers created, Dr. Steven Williams joined Dr. Sievers in Memphis in 2018 and Dr. Gordon moved to Jackson that same year joining Dr. Priester and Dr. Khamapirad.

Drs. Gordon, Priester, Khamapirad and Williams are all fully committed to the original goals established for Mid-South Retina by Dr. Sievers. While providing excellent continuity of care, there is constant communication between the five surgeons regarding challenging cases and ways to improve the care we provide our patients.
